Sleepwalking into the Surveillance State
The historians say that we sleepwalked into a surveillance
state. They meant that the technology for widespread
surveillance progressed and was implemented
in a gradual manner, though quick considering the
actual time scales, and with little in the way of open
discussion about the ramifications, so that before

Animals Can't Be Perfect in all Characteristics
We can expect bodies to be well equipped to
survive, but this does not mean they should be perfect with respect to any one dimension. An
antelope might run faster, and be more likely to escape a leopard, if its legs were a little longer. But
a rival antelope with longer legs, although it might be better equipped to outsprint a predator, has to

tens and hundreds of generations, information would slowly be
distorted and lost.
Books changed all that. Books, purchasable at low cost, permit
us to interrogate the past with high accuracy; to tap the wisdom of
our species; to understand ...They made it possible to interrogate the past, see other view points, and communication across time.

A Reason Not to Use Bookmarks
The plural of anecdotes is not data — but anecdotes are all I have. We don’t yet understand how we think or what it means to change the way we think. Scientists are making inroads and ultimately hope to understand much more. But right now all I and my fellow contributors can do are make observations and generalize.

Someone pointed out to me once that he, like me, never uses a bookmark in a book. I always attributed my negligence to disorganization and laziness — the few times I atte...Folksonomies: internet technology

A bookmark is an artificial place in a book, without which we return to the last point in a book that made an impact on your brain.
