Knowledge VS Understanding
Knowledge
understanding
The facts
The meaning of the facts
A body of coherent facts
The “theory” that provides coherence and meaning to those facts
Verifiable claims
Fallible, in-process theories
Rightor wrong
A matter of degree or sophistication
I know something to be true
I understand why it is, what makes it knowledge
I respond on cue with what I know
I judge when to and when not to use what I know

Reflective equilibrium
No moral position is universal and that each society makes its own moral rules unfettered, so that even acts we would view as unequivocally immoral could be morally unobjectionable in some other culture.

Truth is the approximation of thought to reality
...reality is a system, completely ordered and fully intelligible, with which thought in its advance is more and more identifying itself. We may look at the growth of knowledge … as an attempt by our mind to return to union with things as they are in their ordered wholeness…. and if we take this view, our notion of truth is marked out for us. Truth is the approximation of thought to reality … Its measure is the distance thought has travelled … toward that intelligible system … The d...Folksonomies: empiricism reality

The Wonder of Birds Flocking
What is
remarkable about the starlings' behaviour is that, despite all appearances, there is no choreographer
and, as far as we know, no leader. Each individual bird is just following local rules.
The numbers of individual birds in these flocks can run into thousands, yet they almost
literally never collide. That is just as well for, given the speed at which they fly, any such impact
would severely injure them. Often the whole flock seems to behave as a single individual, wheeling
and turnin...Emergent behavior without collisions.

The Mesh of Science
I do not think that truth becomes more primitive if we pursue it to simpler facts. For no fact in the world is instant, infinitesimal and ultimate, a single mark. There are, I hold, no atomic facts. In the language of science, every fact is a field—a crisscross of implications, those that lead to it and those that lead from it.
Truth in science is like Everest, an ordering of the facts. We organize our experience in patterns which, formalized. make the network of scientific laws. But scie...Science "articulates the movements of the world."
